I'm checking out SuperDuper's manual now, and it seems that this Sandbox thing is the ticket. But for the ones that aren't, I'd rather not deal with doing the whole challenge/response method if I don't have to. I hope this doesn't sound like I'm trying to do something shady, cuz I'm not. Most go in the plugins folder, then you have a settings folder, and then a pref's file which tells the plug that it's been authorized. Which I would then wipe my main drive and reinstall Tiger to it, reinstall my app's, then drag my home folder over, or parts of it.īut if you are saying that I might be able to drag my applications and plugins over to the new install, and then put preferences where they belong, than I might be able to run the plugins, etc still? There really aren't all that many components to a plugin. Maybe there is just no way around it? If there isn't, than I have copy/pasted my System folder, which includes my home folder. So if I install Tiger to my Ext drive, then all my app's to that, I still have to re-authorize them all, etc don't I? I have so many plugins that I own, that I dread going thru the whole reauth process. it just dawned on me that you can't boot to a USB drive can you? I hope you can! That way I can run Disk Warrior or whatever from it. I am using an Ext USB drive, that I partitioned off for a Tiger install. Maybe if it does work, then I should uninstall everything I plan on not using again so that my app folder is what I want it to be after the reinstall. So, does this make a difference too? It seems like an all or nothing thing. I didn't want all of them restored, just certain ones. I was going to selectively restore app's btw. If it won't make any difference and I'll have to reauth them all anyway, then I might as well do a clean reinstall and just copy my home folder back over again and be done. I shouldn't have to since my digital ID will not have changed. Since I'm a musician, I'm hoping that by doing this, I won't have to reauthorize all my plugins. I understand that I can drag and drop my home folder, but if I use a backup program, will I be able to back up and restore applications without having to reinstall them again? Heck, even my Dual QS 1gig runs smoother than this thing! ![]() So, I'm hoping that if I do a clean reinstall, that it will help. This PPC G5 of mine is a dog, and it seems everything really taxes the CPU, even after I added another gig of memory. I'm thinking my 10.4.11 software is messed up. The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media. Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two. ![]() However, it cannot create bootable backups. The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones: ![]() Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary) My personal recommendations are (order is not significant): You should get proper backup software and use it to perform backups. If you want to do a proper backup you should not use drag and drop. Except for your account or Home folder you cannot simply drag and copy for backup as this will mess up the permissions.
